Richard Weissman, the Founder and CEO of The Learning Experience, has personally been active in charitable organizations throughout much of his adult life. Richard currently sits on the Board of Directors of Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida, where he has provided leadership and guidance in all facets of the organization since 2011.
It was in this role that Richard realized The Learning Experience could do so much more as a brand to make a difference than hosting fundraisers and making donations; we could bring the importance of philanthropy directly into the classroom, teaching it right alongside the ABCs and 123s. To make this vision a reality, Richard made Make-A-Wish the charity choice for The Learning Experience while creating a first-of-its-kind philanthropy curriculum that would teach children the core values of selflessness, generosity and giving.
By intertwining our fundraising and volunteering efforts with our curriculum, we’re able to turn lessons from a wide variety of subjects into an extension of our philanthropic activities. For instance, The Learning Experience is currently hosting the biggest philanthropic endeavor of our brand’s history, Bubbles’ Road to Wishes. This virtual walk-a-thon takes our mascot, Bubbles the Elephant, on a month-long trip around the nation with the goal of raising money for Make-A-Wish.
A unique curriculum was developed specifically for this fundraiser, tying in lessons from a variety of subjects, from math to geography to physical fitness. The children have spent the month tracking Bubbles’ progress on their school’s map, counting the number of miles Bubbles has traveled (equal to the number of dollars they have raised), and learning about all the places he has visited. Some centers have even hosted wish kids as part of the Bubbles fundraiser.
Most importantly, the children at The Learning Experience are learning about the difference they can make in the lives of kids just like them who are battling critical illnesses, who deserve a wish to help them replace fear with confidence, sadness with joy and anxiety with hope.
